The Next Best Thing

Yes, the title is also another great reality TV show. Though, sadly, I was unable to catch this one the first time around and am disappointed since I have really enjoyed catching the episodes on You Tube.

Along this line I wanted to share with you another aspect of my nerdiness. I have always been fascinated with celebrity impersonators in the fact that they are dedicating their lives to trying to look and act like some one they have probably never even met. I think it is a fascinating cultural phenomenon that I am not sure is cross cultural. On the other hand, I have also always found drag queens particularly intriguing and hilarious. The fact that they are so taboo in the U.S. and confuse so many people (do I say he or she, is it a guy or a girl) yet is something that is found in hundreds of different cultures around the world, people in the U.S. seem to have the biggest problems with it. In this regard we have the most advanced society that is the most closed minded on the issue. I have been to many a drag show and always find it culturally fascinating.

Ok, so combine these two cultural phenomenons and you will find one of my nerdy obsessions. If you are in this same boat then you would have probably heard of Derrick Barry. He is one hell of an amazing drag queen and celebrity impersonators. He is the top Britney Spears impersonators in the world and is amazingly realistic. So, without further ado........check out this video of Derrick Barry as Britney Spears.

The Nerdiness Thickens

So a buddy of mine came over to play Wii last night and I realized that that in and of itself is pretty dorky for two 24 year old guys. On top of that, I realized that I am a reality TV junky. Before we started driving the Mario Cart around the tracks I talked my friend through the four reality TV shows that I was alternating between. For some reason I just really get sucked into these shows and while I do no plan my day around TV, if I find a reality show while I am wasting time in front of the tube, I will become engulfed in it. Last night I found Greatest American Dog, America's Got Talent, Wife Swap, and So You Think You Can Dance. I have to say though that I have watched the full seasons of American Idol, Nashville Star, The Next Food Network Star, Little People Big World, Deadliest Catch, Last Comic Standing, and sometimes catch I Survived a Japanese Game show.

So my nerdiness is expanding at a rapid rate, and even more I use these shows as an insight into different people's personalities and cultures. In a way it all comes around to being an anthropologist where everything I do is a matter of experimentation and observation.

My little Office

While I don't spend a lot of time in my office I wanted to share with all of you the type of office space that I work in. While it is not glamorous and often moldy and damp, it is all mine and I don't have to share it with anybody.

Here is my desk and all my tables to lay out my artifacts for examination. I spend a lot of time here and even pretend that one day I might have people in to help me finish all the work to be done. Everyone can dream can't they.

This is is my collection that I am working with. While I would really like to show all of you what kind of materials I work with, I can't show Native American artifacts and remains in photos since NAGPRA laws went into place.

And these are all of my very high tech containers that allow for my specimen to stay nice and dry.

So know you all have an idea of the glamorous and high tech life of an archaeologist/forensic anthropologist.

A lazy weekend

I really had a chance to relax and regain my composer this weekend. I have to say that I haven't felt so rested in a very long time and my anxiety and tension are subsided quite a bit.

Saturday I was able to go to the farmer's market and was pleasantly suprised. After being there and talking to some farmers for over an hour I still only spent $27. So for $27 I got:

focassia bread
6 pints of blueberries
2 lbs of new potatoes
1 lb of habenero peppers
1 lb of okra
4 medium green bell peppers
1 lb of peaches
1 bag of arugula

I was shocked at how much I was able to get on so little money. Unfortunately the organic and free-range poultry and pork were not there this week or I would have spent more. This just reinforces the fact that without the cost of transportation being added to your produce, food can be much cheaper. And supporting the local economy has many benefits.

Other than that I just had a couple of drinks with friends at a buddies house on Saturday night and spent all day Sunday around the house with the wife. The two of us have been doing a lot to make sure we are eating healthy and making healthy choices yet Sunday is always our kind of free day. For example, out dinner last night was a Southern veggie dinner. We had french fries, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, and fried green beans all paired with macaroni and cheese. Granted we did use the new Smart Balance fry oil which cut our calories in half, yet our calories were still way up there.

Overall it was a great weekend and I hope that I can stay relaxed and carefree.

What Up?

So....whats new with me. First of all, I am getting really excited about returning to class. As many of my friends, and wife, don't understand.....I absolutely love learning. I love being in the academic setting and being challenged with new ideas and perspectives at this point in my life is something that I adore. I think working within a museum is going to bring some new challenges as well and can't wait to get started.

On another note, I got contacted from a friend of my mom's yesterday because he found some bones out on his property and wants my opinion. This is a lot of what a forensic anthropologist does; has pictures sent to them in order to answer the question "Is this human?" and then goes and checks it out. I am really excited because if these are indeed human remains it could bring on some great opportunities for me. And while I have only assisted in situations like these, I am going to stay confident in the fact that this kind of situation is what I am trained for and go get it done. I have already called a fellow archaeologist of mine to accompany me in the case that I do have to go to the site so that while I am examining the visible remain (you never move them) we can decided if they are pre-historic or modern and make a more logical assessment to know how to proceed. Knowing the location in which they were found, the condition of the remains, and how they were found.....I am guessing pre-historic.
They were found when a bunch of guys were out looking for "arrow-heads", aka projectile points, which is illegal just to put that out there. Even though it is private land, the removal of Native American artifacts is punishable by law. The artifacts are property of the tribe to which they are affiliated and protected by federal law. Just to throw that out there because it happens more often than you would think.

Last, but not least, after being in Memphis for a solid year I am still struggling to figure out my new group of peers. It isn't so much the individuals that I am working with in the anthropology arena (since I haven't fully immersed myself into that group just yet) but those other individuals introduced to me through my wife. It is just taking my time to figure out who the individuals are that I can have a good time with and be done. There is a lot of drama in that group and have been able to determine those individuals who have drama that follows them. It has been a good week this week in that I am finding some people that I have ignored in the past that I really starting to enjoy being around. All in all, the drama that you have read about over the past couple of weeks is being forgotten and I am doing the same to the people that it revolved around. Things are going good and now if I can just get back in the classroom I think things will be even better.

Weekly Recipe: Pineapple Chicken

This Pineapple Chicken recipe isn't one that we have gotten from anywhere but something that my mother made up when we were kids because it isn't difficult and is really quick. Hope you like it and play around with it a little bit to make it what you want it to be.

Pineapple Chicken

2 Boneless, skinless chicken breasts cut into bit sized pieces
1 green bell pepper, cut into bite size pieces
1 yellow onion, cut into bite sized pieces
1 16oz. can of pineapple in its own juice
1 heaping teaspoon of corn starch
Olive oil
Rice

Simply saute the chicken in olive oil over medium heat until white in color. At that point add in your onions and peppers (can add match stick carrots to add color) and cook until onions are transparent. Add your pineapple and its juice and bring to a boil. Turn down to low and let simmer 5-10 minutes until pineapple becomes softened. Dissolve corn starch with 1/4 cup water and add to chicken, remove from heat and let stand 2-3 minutes. Juices should become thick and form sauce. Serve with rice and enjoy!

Worth Reading

I was a little apprehensive at reading Miranda July's "No One Belongs Here More Than You," but I was pleasantly suprised. Dark Knight

I have now seen the much anticipated Dark Knight and have a lot to say. The problem is, I am going to have to see it again before I make a final judgment. As I have said before, I was a really big fan of the original Batman movies and therefore did a little too much comparing versus appreciating the movie. I will try to go watch it again this week and will let you all know what I think.

Dark Knight vs. Batman Trailers (Split Screen) - Have to watch

(Thanks Aaron)

Few people know, including my wife, how much I really like Batman. I had many of the comics growing up, all of the action figures, and have watched all the movies hundreds of times. The original Batman movie with Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, and Jack Nicholson is my all time favorite. While I am very excited by the release of today's new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, I am still a little apprehensive. I know they are not supposed to be the same, but the character that Jack Nicholson brought to the screen is "my Joker" and I am not sure if Heath will be able to live up to my expectations. Here is a recap of Joker over the years just in case you are a little rusty.

NPR Music Show up for Emmy

I just found out today that NPR Music's show/documentary called Project Song has been nominated for an Emmy. I am very excited.

The show has a up-and-coming music group come into a recording studio for two days and record an all original song. Once in the studio the groups are given their choice of abstract photos and choice of phrases and are required to write a song around their choices. It has turned out to be really amazing.

The episode that is up for the Emmy is for one involving the band Georgie James out of Washington, D.C. and revolving around the phrase "Something Joyful" and a picture of a stack of books in an empty apartment. It is really cool to see what their interpretations came to be, and I have to say that I really liked the song that they made.

Culture of our food

As many of you who read this have probably figured out.....one of my favorite hobbies (and favorite things) is food. Not any one aspect of food, but everything that food encompasses from taste, to cooking, to culture, to growing.....I enjoy it all. Well with all the participation that I have been doing both in the food market and with food preparation I have been doing a lot of thinking and have been a media junky when it comes to all things food especially when it focuses on the new shifts toward local and/or sustainable.

One topic that has sparked a lot of interest for me is the difference between the ideas around food in the United States versus other countries. The United States does have certain food cultures (often revolving around large cuts of meat or fried anything) but not the same way as in other cultures. For example, Italy is known for certain foods, certain styles of cooking, and they revolve around the seasons. How many times do you cook at home with foods that were grown only in your own area of the world and have certain styles that are unique to your region. I word this in this way in order to contradict myself. Lets take grilling for an example of an American cultural cooking style. While this revolves around beef, pork, chicken, and even seafood. How often is it that you live near where the seafood was caught? Do the side items and condiments included reflect American cultural expression and are inclusive of items grown in your own region. The same thing is involved with Soul Food or the Southern Fried culture. While these styles reflect a period in which the styles of cooking needed to be inexpensive and produce the most amount of calories for the southern farmer, they have now gone to a more global focus. With this outlook I find only a few dishes that I can identify as American and still can't clearly identify what "American" food is. So, while French, Italian, Mexican, Asian, Indian, Fusion, and Sushi are styles of food that I enjoy, is it because I live in America that I don't see "American" cuisine as being something sought after or identified? I look at my farmer's market and what is provided there and don't know how to cook these foods that are local to me. I have learned to love beets but didn't know how to before a couple of weeks ago, and a lot of other veggies grown here are actually veggies from other countries that have been grown to meet demand. What can we consider to be American and what have we just taken from other cultures? Or is that what being American is all about? We even stole corn......

I am an Anthropologist!

Getting funding for my masters degree has led me to a new step in my life. Not know what the hell I am gonna do when it is all over with. I am not going to bore you with all of the details (just yet) because I am saying all this to lead to a recap of my super self-searching week. I have come to the realization that I am an anthropologist. In every situation, every day, in every way, I am an anthropologist. I can not do anything in my day without analyzing the possible reasons and outcomes for every look I get, everything that is said to me.....every single decision that is made in any aspect of my and other peoples day. I have to say that I do enjoy it, but it also becomes very daunting. This is how I can be confident in the fact that I am an anthropologist in every way.

For those of yall who watch my twitter updates you will know that I got into a situation this past week that I was not to proud of. And while I am not going to really go into the whole thing that much I did realize something about myself. I use what I learn about people against them when I get into arguments with them. Well not always arguments, but when I feel attacked personally or professionally I take what things I know about that person's personality, pet peeves, idiosyncrasies, and opinions and use them against them in order to get revenge. It isn't so much that I don't have an argument, but that I am able to couple that with what I know will bother them the most in order to feel like I am victorious in the battle. I hurt them to make sure that I don't feel like they get the better of me in an argument. It isn't right, but I don't know how not to do it. Granted, this it not something that happens very often, yet when it does I leave feeling guilty and proud at the same time. Proud that I had the upper hand but guilty in that I said things in a way that I know would bother them the most. Regardless, this time it just made things worse and looking back on it I do feel bad for pushing all the right buttons but realize that I also took all the negative feelings and times that I had held back in order to be the bigger person, gathered them up, and threw all the punches in one very loud and angry punch.

I feel better and confident at the same time (if that can even make sense). That was my first realization, the second one is that when I am in a situation where I feel attacked personally and when someone makes threats against me and my wife (especially my wife) I toss all logic out the window. When my back is against the wall in a situation when one should act mature and walk away, I don't. I don't walk away from a situation when I know how it is going to turn out. That anger that I subside and thought that I could control does have its limits to being boxed in and now I know why it happens. I have never felt so in control of that anger that I didn't want to show in my life and all in all have learned from the situation. I have also learned that I still have a lot to learn....about myself!

So it is true that the animal instincts are innate, that they can't be fully suppressed, and a person that thinks he knows people, reason, and control can lose it when his back is against the wall.....wow....I am an anthropologist and am only human.

Weekly Recipe

Here is the other recipe that I promised. It is another kind of catch-all pasta dish, yet it has a little different sauce to it. It is also one that takes very, very, little time to prepare.

Sausage and Spinach Pasta

2 of any kind of andoueille or spicy sausages that you prefer (cut into bite size pieces)
1 thing of fresh spinach (remember that it cooks down a lot)
1 clove of garlic, diced
1 shallot, diced
1 serving of pasta of your choice
1 lemon for juice and zest
1 cup chicken broth
1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning
Olive oil

In a deep pan begin heating the sausage in olive oil until heated through (change in color). Add spinach and season with some salt and pepper. Once spinach begins to wilt, add garlic and shallot and allow to sauté until shallots are transparent. Add lemon juice, zest, and chicken broth and allow to cook. Meanwhile, cook pasta and set aside. Once chicken broth has reduced by half, leaving the liquid to be thicker in consistency, add in the pasta and serve.

Supper, supper easy, and you can make it even healthier with whole wheat pasta, low fat chicken broth, and low fat sausage. Great recipe when you need to get read of some of those fresh veggies or don't have a lot of time on your hands. Enjoy!

Male Cycles

Many guys hate to admit it, I am not one of those, but guys have monthly cycles of hormone balance. While there has been little scientific publication on the topic, it is a topic considered in anthropological circles and even discussed in most A&P classes. The reason that I bring this up is that I am definetely in my "time of the month." I am irritable for no reason, my athletic performance is down, I am bloated, and just feel like crap. Here is what I found on the topic:

MEN HAVE CYCLES, TOO

Although little research has been done on the topic, men have monthly cycles, too. As far back as the seventeenth century, the Italian scientist Sanctorius weighed men daily over long periods of time and discovered that men underwent a monthly weight change of about one or two pounds. More recently, a Danish endocrinologist kept daily records of hormones excreted in his urine. When analyzed, those records showed that his hormones rose and fell in roughly a thirty-day rhythm. Interestingly, beard growth also shows a rhythm of approximately thirty days; in other words, the amount of beard a man grows daily increases and decreases in a monthly cycle.

In 1929, a researcher carefully followed the moods of seventeen men and showed that men, like women, have emotional cycles of about a month to six weeks in length. According to the researcher's findings, men tend to be more apathetic and indifferent during the low period of their emotional cycles and more likely to magnify small problems into big ones. During the high period of their cycles, men have more energy, a greater sense of well-being, lower body weight, and less need for sleep.

In the early 1970s, Ms. magazine reported that a Japanese bus and taxi company used this knowledge of male monthly cycles to reduce accidents involving its vehicles. After charting the cycles of each of its drivers, the company rearranged routes and schedules to best match the men's low and high periods. The result: After two years, the company experienced a one-third drop in its accident rate.

Men, like women, may benefit from following the Japanese company's example and charting their individual monthly rhythms. Use the chart and Cycle Changes list on page 120. If you are married or living with a woman, both of you may find it interesting and helpful to chart your cycles together to see if they are in or out of sync with each other.

Cycle Changes

Here is a sampling of the physical and psychological sensations that may vary in intensity at different phases of your monthly menstrual cycle. When charting your cycle, you may wish to expand this list to include additional physical or emotional changes:

PSYCHOLOGICAL

Beneficial
Creativity
Optimism
Self-confidence
Exuberance
Feeling attractive
Feeling sexual
Contentment
Enjoying being with people
Excess energy

Disruptive
Irritability
Anger
Tension
Anxiety/Feelings of doom
Depression
Insomnia
Nightmares
Feeling unattractive
Crying spells
Feeling unsocial

PHYSICAL

Migraine headaches
Mouth sores
Weight gain
Weight loss
Swollen ankles or hands
Bloating and edema
Breast tenderness
Increased athletic performance
Decreased athletic performance
Heart palpitations
Backache
Fatigue
Acne
Fainting
Loss of appetite
Increased appetite
Reluctance to exercise
Cravings (for alcohol, salt, or sugar)
Sleepiness
More accident prone

SHORTER MALE CYCLES

In addition to its monthly rhythm, beard growth has a second – and weaker weekly rhythm in men. Beards tend to grow the most on Sunday and the least on Wednesday although the difference is not great enough for most men to notice. Because beard growth seems to be triggered by testosterone levels (which rise during sexual activity), this weekly increase and decrease in beard growth may be the result of increased sexual activity on the weekend.

One of the most perplexing and shorter male cycles involves the rise and fall in sperm count. A man's total sperm count peaks every two to five days; for most men, the peak comes every three or four days (which is also, by the way, the same rhythm exhibited by male rabbits). What causes the sperm count to rise and fall in such a rhythm or how it affects sexuality is still being explored.

This being said, ladies, be patient with us guys when we too are pissy for no reason!

Yay!

Weekly Recipe

I know, I know. I didn't divulge a recipe last week and so you will get two this week.

This recipe is one that I got from Real Simple magazine (my wife's) and we have cooked it many times and loved it.

Lemon Chicken with Olives

Real Simple

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons lemon zest, plus 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Kosher salt and pepper
1 1/2 pounds chicken cutlets, thawed
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 shallots, thinly sliced
1 cup pitted green olives
1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
1/2 cup dry white wine (such as Sauvignon Blanc)

Mix the flour, cumin, zest, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/2 teaspoon pepper on a flat plate. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels and dredge in the flour mixture.

Heat 1 tablespoon of the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the chicken in 2 batches until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate.

Wipe out the skillet and return to medium heat. Heat the remaining oil. Add the shallots and cook until soft, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in the olives, parsley, lemon juice, and wine and bring to a boil. Return the chicken to the pan, nestling it in the olives and shallots. Reduce heat to low and cook, covered, until the chicken is cooked through, about 5 minutes.

Divide among individual plates, spooning the olives, shallots, and any sauce over the top.

4th of July

Despite the fact that I have lost a lot of patriotism, there are still quite a few things that I have to have for a 4th of July weekend.

And here they are:

1. Baseball

2. Beer

3. Grilled something (hamburgers, hot dogs, or even BBQ)

4. Watermelon

5. Family

6. Watch an old movie (lots of time it is Independance Day with Will Smith, but today it is Jaws.....a great one too)

7. Pool (whether or not I am swimming, just having that aspect of the weekend makes it better)

8. FIREWORKS (granted, living in Memphis I will not be able to tempt fate with fireworks this year, maybe next year)

Those are just a few of the things that I require for a successful and fulfilling 4th of July weekend.

Have anything to add?

Happy 4th Everyone!

Not so healthy foods.....

A lot of posts in my blog reader have revolved around health, dieting, and food. So, after The Modern Gal's post a couple of days ago on "The Best Foods You Probably Don't Eat" I realized that I do eat quite a few of those "healthy" foods and found a listing of my own. One of my newly discovered blogs is Strong Lifts: Build Muscle and Lose fat through Strength Training and they posted the following list on 10 Foods Your Probably Think Are Healthy but Aren't

So here you go

10 Foods you Probably Think are Healthy but Aren't

Jul 1st, 2008 by Mehdi

To build muscle & lose fat, 90% of your diet must consist of whole unprocessed foods. That's anything that doesn't come out of a box like meats, veggies, eggs, fruits, etc. Eating 6 meals/day leaves room for 4 junk meals per week.

You're already doing that but not getting results? Maybe you're not eating that healthy. Here are 10 foods you might think are healthy because they're labeled as such, but which in reality are anything but healthy.

1. Breakfast Cereals. Cereals are labeled healthy & nutritive and recommended for weight loss. Read the labels: cereals are often high in sugar & salt and their vitamin/mineral content is chemical based. Drop that spoon.

Healthy alternative: one of these 7 breakfast recipes.

2. Granola Bars. Granola bars consist of healthy oats & nuts. But they're glued together with blood sugar raising ingredients like corn syrup. Some bars even contain chocolate chips, making them as bad as candy bars.

Healthy alternative: homemade protein bars.

3. Yogurt with Fruit at The Bottom. Fat free doesn't mean healthy. Labels tell you they contain added sugars, corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. Same with fat free frozen yogurts which can contain 20g sugars per 1/2 cup.

Healthy alternative: plain unflavored yogurt mixed with fruit cut into pieces.

4. Bread. Convenient and tastes good, but not as healthy as you think. Whole grain or whole wheat means nothing. Dark bread can still contain corn syrup & trans-fats and eating too much bread will make you fat.

Healthy alternative: Ezekiel Bread, but lower your bread intake.

5. Sandwiches. Often labeled "fitness" or "light", but containing sugar-laden salad dressings, little veggies & proteins and too much white bread. Freshness is questionable and you need the foot-long to fill your stomach.

Healthy alternative: make your own sandwiches.

6. Fruit Juice. Even 100% fruit juice has added sugars, usually fructose. Cans of fruit juice contain up to 38g sugar per 8oz. Excess fructose causes obesity, bad cholesterol, poor appetite control, etc.

Healthy alternative: home-made fruit juice or eat fruit.

7. Sport Drinks. Supposed to help you replenish electrolytes, carbs, etc. But it's actually sugar water, with up to 30g sugar/serving. If you eat healthy and don't drink 2 gallons water in 1 setting, you don't risk water intoxication.

Healthy alternative: water during workout, protein + carbs post workout.

8. Fast Food Salads. Contain sugar-laden salad dressings, croutons made from refined white flour or white floor pasta. In many cases you're better off ordering a double cheeseburger than a chicken salad.

Healthy alternative: make your own salads.

9. Frozen Meals. Nothing is wrong with frozen veggies/fruits. But a lot is wrong with frozen meals often labeled "light" or "healthy". They're processed, high in sugar, and come with sauces & sodium. Avoid.

Healthy alternative: cook all your meals for the day in the morning or evening.

10. Diet Soda. Contain artificial sweeteners like the controversial aspartame. Do your research and decide if you want to take the risk. Start with this & this thread on diet soda in StrongLifts.com Forum.

Healthy alternative: water, water with squeezed lemon, green tea.

What to do, What to do?

I knew that I needed to blog today to get rid of at least one of the million thoughts that are floating around in my head. It is just so hard for me to decipher which topics are actually interesting to other people and which ones are just interesting to me. Either way, you don't have to read this if you don't want.....so I will do whatever I want.

Among the many thinks I want to share with everyone are:

The new Pixar movie (Short Circuit remake) being boycotted by conservatives on the remise that the movie says that humans are destroying the earth,

The many blunders of our presidential candidates,

The can have guns - no death penalty for child rapists - death penalty for homicides only - give out more guns for more homicide - and don't allow abortion big rant that I am saving for a later date,

The general state of our attempt to still combine church and state, morality and government

.....and last but not least, gym culture.

So that is what I will rant about today, the gym.

My wife and I have been going to the gym for almost a month now and despite my initial weariness, it has been great. The general awkwardness that I was expecting in regards to the dozens of different types of equipment is there, but not a bad as I expected. That is until I attempt a new machine when the gym is full and there are no illustrations, that is worth seeing. Otherwise I have gotten myself into a routine and am seeing and feeling some progress already. We are hitting the gym any where from 3-5 times a week and usually do 30 minutes of cardio and then an additional 15-30 minutes of weights. On particularly "bad-feeling" days I might even add in some additional cardio. And am pleased with how everything is turning out.

On another note, the gym culture is very interesting to observe and yet a driving component in my working out at the same time. On one hand you have the quintessential "meat heads" whom you can hear grunting and trying to one-up each other and they are coupled with the extremely vain that pose in front of the mirror after every set. This brings me to another point, there are definite click to be had here too. The free weights and bench press area are on type of click where one would get a "invitation only" type of feel if trying to work out in their area. The cardio area brings another with people switching from one machine to the next and checking the status of everyone around them in a sort of silent competition. This is interesting in that I find myself being pushed to perform at a higher level when this group is present. And then you have the machine click. This group goes from machine to machine, looking over their shoulders to see how much weight you are doing on the machine in order to make sure they do more after you leave. Each little group has established friendships and commrodery while leaving the rest of us to simple pleasantries in order to feel like we belong. All in all there is this sense of "At least we are all doing this to be healthier" that you get from most people and it leaves it very obvious when the vain types show up. The process is self-gratifying and makes a more pleasurable time than I expected. I am somewhat competitive yet find myself more so when I am there.

I like the way this whole gym thing is turning out and am finding myself a little addicted. I am proud of this addiction though.
